Enforcing CPU allocation in a heterogeneous IaaS
نویسندگان
چکیده
In an Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), the amount of resources allocated to a virtual machine (VM) at creation time may be expressed with relative values (relative to the hardware, i.e., a fraction of the capacity of a device) or absolute values (i.e., a performancemetric which is independent from the capacity of the hardware). Surprisingly, disk or network resource allocations are expressed with absolute values (bandwidth), but CPU resource allocations are expressedwith relative values (a percentage of a processor). Themajor problemwith CPU relative value allocations is that it depends on the capacity of the CPU, which may vary due to different factors (server heterogeneity in a cluster, Dynamic Voltage Frequency Scaling (DVFS)). In this paper, we analyze the side effects and drawbacks of relative allocations. We claim that CPU allocation should be expressed with absolute values. We propose such a CPU resource management system and we demonstrate and evaluate its benefits.

Seeing Shapes in Clouds: On the Performance-Cost trade-off for Heterogeneous Infrastructure-as-a-Service
In the near future FPGAs will be available by the hour, however this new Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) usage mode presents both an opportunity and a challenge: The opportunity is that programmers can potentially trade resources for performance on a much larger scale, for much shorter periods of time than before. The challenge is in finding and traversing the trade-off for heterogeneous Iaa...

Cloud computing has became a buzzword owing to availability and on-demand services that have changed the way working of all business organizations resulting in exponentially growth of cloud based applications. IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) has played a key role in making the resources Like CPU, RAM, bandwidth, harddisk; VMs etc. available on demand. Customers have to pay only for the resou...
متن کاملProfit - Aware Policy Scheduler ( PAPS ) for Resource Allocation in IaaS Clouds
Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) is a type of Cloud Computing service delivery model that provides compute, storage, and network resources to the consumers in an on demand manner. In IaaS cloud environment, resource allocation is one of the complex tasks due to the heterogeneous nature of cloud resources and dynamic job requirements to run the jobs. However, the IaaS cloud resource allocation...
متن کاملAn Enhanced Scheduling in Weighted Round Robin for the Cloud Infrastructure Services
Infrastructure as services (IaaS) in Cloud computing offers the features of increasing the hardware resources (CPU cores, RAM, hard disk or storage space, and network bandwidth) on-demand in no time or utilizing the additional configured VMs to execute the business applications in a shortest time as possible by utilizing the dynamic scaling. The scheduling algorithm in the IaaS allows the appli...
متن کاملA Method for Measuring Energy Consumption in IaaS Cloud
The ability to measure the energy consumed by cloud infrastructure is a crucial step towards the development of energy efficiency policies in the cloud infrastructure. There are hardware-based and software-based methods of measuring energy usage in cloud infrastructure. However, most hardware-based energy measurement methods measure the energy consumed system-wide - including the energy lost in...
